In this verse, Jesus is speaking to a group of people who had followed him after he had miraculously fed them with five loaves of bread and two fish. They were seeking more miraculous signs from him, and Jesus responded by telling them that they should not focus solely on physical signs, but instead on the true purpose of his ministry.
Jesus then says that the only work that God requires of them is to believe in him, the one that God has sent.
